Chief Joseph Highway then Beartooth Pass into Red Lodge, MT

5-24-14

This was one of the coolest drives we have ever been on!!  We drove from our property to the Chief Joseph Highway.  This takes you up into the mountains and into Shoshone National Forest.

It was stunning!! I can't wait to drive it again, maybe on the scooters next time:)

Here are pictures from Chief Joseph Highway (we bumped into someone who called it Chief Joe for short):

The valley in the picture above and below, looks back toward where our land is!! It's so incredibly beautiful out here.

I believe this tree is the state tree of WY, but I'm not 100% sure....  It looks like a picture we saw, but I didn't have the picture with me to compare exactly.

SNOW!!!  Just a bit, but wait for the Beartooth pictures!!

I spy with my little eye.....

There are 1or 2 chipmunks in each of these pictures.  We haven't seen any squirrels out here yet, but we got all excited about the chipmunks playing on the rocks at one of the 'lookout' stops we made.

The Chief Joseph Highway comes to a dead end - you can turn left and go toward Cooke City, MT (the northern entrance into Yellowstone), or you can go right and head to Red Lodge, MT.  We went toward Red Lodge.  I believe this was the opening weekend for the Beartooth Pass, and when you see these pictures you will know why!!

It is a snowmobilers paradise out here!!  One of these days we hope to be one of the crazy people that snowmobile in June up in Beartooth!!

This person was with a group and they would trek up the mountain, then ski down it!!

When we got to the top, it started thundering.  Shortly after, it began snowing and sleeting!

This is one of the spots where the 'snow tunnel' was so tall on either side that we believe it was 20-30 feet high!!  It was crazy, but so fun.

I can't wait to drive the Beartooth Pass again! We want to go later this summer and again in the fall.  I'd love to see what it looks like after all the snow is melted too.  We were told there are some beautiful lakes and waterfalls too.
